» RELATED: How Europe Lost Faith in Its Own Civilization - By Frits Bolkestein (WSJ, 04.06.2011)

    Transcript:

Years ago, Mrs Thatcher recognised the truth behind the European Project. She saw that it was about taking away democracy from nation states and handing that power to largely unaccountable people.

Knowing as she did that the euro would not work she saw that this was a very dangerous design. Now we in UKIP take that same view and I tried over the years in this parliament to predict what the next moves would be as the euro disaster unfolded.

But not even me, in my most pessimistic of speeches would have imagined, Mr Rehn, that you and others in the Troika would resort to the level of common criminals and steal money from peoples' bank accounts in order to keep propped up this total failure that is the euro.

You even tried to take money away from the small investors in direct breach of the promise you made back in 2008.

Well the precedent has been set, and if we look at countries like Spain where business bankruptcies are up 45% year on year, we can see what your plan is to deal with the other bailouts as they come.

I must say, the message this sends out to investors is very loud and clear: Get your money out of the Eurozone before they come for you.
What you have done in Cyprus is you actually sounded the death knell of the euro. Nobody in the international community will have confidence in leaving their money there.

And how ironic to see the Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev compare your actions and say, ' I can only compare it to some of the decisions taken by the Soviet authorities.'

And then we have a new German proposal that says that actually what we ought to do is confiscate some of the value of peoples' properties in the southern Mediterranean eurozone states.

This European Union is the new communism. It is power without limits. It is creating a tide of human misery and the sooner it is swept away the better.

But what of this place, what of the parliament? This parliament has the ability to hold the Commission to account. I have put down a motion of censure debate on the table. I wonder whether any of you have the courage to recognise it and to support it. I very much doubt that.

And I am minded that there is a new Mrs Thatcher in Europe and he is called Frits Bolkenstein. And he has said of this parliament - remember he is a former Commissioner: 'It is not representative anymore for the Dutch or European citizen. The European Parliament is living out a federal fantasy which is no longer sustainable.'

    How right he is.

    "Well, Congratulations everybody.

Davud Cameron had you worried for a bit. You thought he was even a eurosceptic. But it's okay, you had a quiet word with him and the real David Cameron was back.

    Whatever happened to the veto?

    No more vetos anymore!

Indeed Mr Cameron is now actively supporting this quite despicable pact, this plan to destroy and humiliate nation states that do not live up to a Germanic view of how economies ought to be run.

Now, I must say I thought the weekend's proposals from the German Finance Ministry that came out, suggesting that a European Commissioner and his staff occupy a big building in Athens and take over the running of the country.

    - A gauleiter some may say, - I thought it must be a joke.

Possibly even this EU could sink to those depths. But of course, it was just a negotiating position and what we've now got for Greece is diplomacy at gunpoint. It's the kind of strategy that Palmerston used against Athens back in the 19th century.

Nobody can deny today that Greece is any more than a colony. And this is all a terrible, huge mistake.

Greece is not a failing subsidiary company where head office needs to come in and take control. Greece is a nation with a soul, a nation with pride, with history. Goodness me, they invented democracy in the first place.

They are suffering, they have youth unemployment of 50% caused Mr Van Rompuy because they are in the Euro.

You are causing the misery in these countries and you blather on about creating jobs and growth. None of this is actually going to happen.

And remember, these people are being driven into humiliation and desperation, and desperate people do desperate things. And I am deeply fearful for what will happen in Greece if we continue with this mad course. And of course - as Mr Barroso knows - it's going to be Portugal next"

    Transcript:

    • Point of Order during Voting Time/Explanations of Vote

    • In the Chair: EP vice-president Stavros Lambrinides MEP (Greece), P&D group (Socialists)

    Text of Point of Order:
Mr President, the votes we are about to take on the calendars for 2012 & 2013 avoid the real issue. Members of this house believe that they are growing in power but that is not the case. The requirement for12 sittings in Strasbourg every year is written in the Treaties and it is therefore a legal requirement. So MEPs are, in fact, unable to alter EU systems; they do not have the power.

These amendments are to resolve the problem of August being free, causing two visits to Strasbourg in September. An earlier attempt to have two part sessions in one week, Mon/ Tues, and Thurs/ Fri, with Weds blank, died a death. It is now suggested to have short sittings in two weeks in October, so still 12 visits per year. How that resolves the problem is beyond me. The difficulty is in getting to Strasbourg, not in how long we are there each week, so how is this proposition helpful. Can some one please enlighten me?

17.0 - Exchange of views with the Commission and the European Social Partners on the Working Time Directive and its implementation

    Full Transcript

Subject: the Working Time Directive (WTD): 1. the need for Member State (MS) opt-outs, and 2. the damaging effect on the qualification of junior doctors in hospital clinical training

    SPEECH BEGINS

    [Point one -- OPT-OUTS]

"I am very interested to hear that the Commission reports that no less than 16 of the MS out of the 27 still want opt-outs [from the WTD], which is hardly a blocking...majority as some members of this cmte have alleged in the past.

I am also interested to hear that at least one other visiting speaker today has said that opt-outs should be retained, and I agree with them, so they should. If 16MS want opt-outs, then that should tell this company that something about the matter of opt-outs and the WTD.

These countries have worked out their own position with regard to employment and workers, and I believe they should be allowed to continue in their traditional path.

[Point two -- 'CORE TIME' - DAMAGING IMPACT IN UK ON JUNIOR DOCTOR CLINICAL TRAINING]

The second point I'd like to raise Madam Chairman, is simply on core time, in one specific consideration. It has impact very very greatly upon the medical profession. I'm not too worried about core time in other places, eg, truck drivers. It is quite obvious that they must take whatever hours of rest per day it is laid down for them, but are you aware that in the UK, and I cannot speak for anywhere else, that last year several hundred young doctors left the profession, because having completed their studies in medical school, they went into the hospitals to do clinical training, but the WTD forced them to quit those training hours before they had gained the necessary experience. They were unable to complete their qualifications. Now those trainee doctors were not like the experienced physicians with whom they were working, who were carrying out the bulk of the work, they were looking, listening, learning, only lending a hand.
How can you possibly say that extended hours of working for them resulted in a health problem for them, and still less, a health problem for their patients? We lost several hundred good young doctors because of it, they cannot be replaced 'just like that', and that cannot be good for the health and safety of the rest of the population. Thank you."
