A record number of candidates stood for the UK Independence Party in the East Midlands last week with some notable and encouraging results reported across the region.

The party fielded 109 candidates in the East Midlands, up from 82 candidates at the last local elections in 2007 and won an encouraging 27,798 votes.

The party contested 24 district and borough councils, three parish councils and also fielded two mayoral candidates.

Husband and wife team Don and Sue Ransome were both elected onto parish councils in Boston, Lincolnshire - doubling the number of seats held by the party in the region.

Mr Ransome won a seat on Wyberton Parish Council with 353 votes, while Mrs Ransome retained her seat on Kirton Parish Council with 390 votes.

The UK Independence party's MEP for the East Midlands, Derek Clark, said:  "We have seen some very encouraging results across the East Midlands.

"Not only did we field a record number of candidates - up by 27 on 2007 - but we also recorded positive results throughout the area.

"The results give us a solid base to build on over the coming years and illustrate how we have struck a chord with the electorate."

Other notable results for the party at the ballot box on Thursday included Jim Broomfield just missing out on a seat on the East Ward of Brackley Town Council. He achieved 537 votes, just 25 short of winning a seat.

Jodie Sutton only narrowly missed out on a seat on Boston Borough Council by 27 votes in the Five Villages Ward, and David Underwood, achieved an astonishing 30.3 per cent of the vote on the Croft Ward for East Lindsey District Council in Lincolnshire.

In Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, David Hamilton stood for town mayor and managed to retain his deposit in another notable step forward for the party.

About Us:

The UK Independence Party exists because none of the old traditional political parties are prepared to accept that the real government of Britain is now being transferred to Brussels.

Our purpose is to restore the authority for governing Britain to our elected parliament in Westminster. We have a wide-ranging manifesto covering issues right across the political spectrum.
