This announcement is a kick in the teeth for the people of Corby. Many jobs were lost when the steel works closed down all those years ago, but at least a remnant remained under Tata. It is essential for the UK to retain skills and this is important for Corby too, it means that a range of jobs remain to give differing options for school leavers especially.
With a reduced work force at Tata this vital element was -still present in Corby to some degree. To lose 100 jobs out of the now small workforce in Corby's steel industry is bad enough, let us hope that it goes no further. Indeed, is it possible that Tata can avoid this now by absorbing the effects of the current turn-down. When things look up again it may be difficult to restore the jobs lost now.
Sincerely
Derek Clark MEP
