The Editor,
Dear Sir,
Further to the comments made in your pages and online regarding my views on a referendum for Scotland.
The countries of the UK grew together over several centuries and, yes, with quite a degree of conflict from which we have all recovered.
The difference is this was a gradual process resulting in a Parliament at Westminster wherein the elected representatives alone are responsible for initiating legislation. That applies whether they are English, Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish MPs. Legislation in the EU is initiated by the Commission which no-one elected.
I would not seek to deny Scotland the right to a referendum but I do think that both Scotland and the rest of the UK benefit from the current position.
Do I deny the right for the UK to determine its future in the EU in the same way? No I don't, I want a referendum on our membership of the EU. But, whereas a Scottish referendum seems to be on the cards we are being constantly denied a referendum on our membership of the EU in spite of promises before the last election.
Yours sincerely
Derek Clark MEP
