The Editor,
Dear Sir,
On 11th January a report by Mike O'Sullivan noted the Nottingham Work Place Parking Levy is to be increased to nearly £300 a year. It's a bad idea in the first place, never mind the level of fee.
There is discrimination in this scheme since a company with fewer than 10 parking spaces does not have to pay the tax. That means where companies pass the charge onto the employee some will be charged for parking at their place of work and some will not. Discrimination is outlawed by the Lisbon Treaty.
I therefore sent a Written Question to the Commission on 1st November 2011 making this point and asking does it conflict with Lisbon. The reply was, "Question inadmissible, it is beyond the competence of the Commission". If people think that the EU is there to help the ordinary person, especially a work force, then they need to think again. This reply from the Commission is typical of their attitude.
With this scheme starting in April I think it's about time that someone asked the big companies in particular whether they are going to pass this charge on to their employees or will the company itself take the hit. In Nottingham generally I think everyone is entitled to have an answer to that question. They will then know exactly who is funding the improvement in Nottingham transport.
Yours sincerely
Derek Clark MEP
